Revise Georgetown KY City Ordinance to Allow Chickens within City Limits

The Issue

I, like many residents within our city limits, have experienced the joy and educational benefits of raising chickens. It's not just a hobby, but a wholesome learning experience for children, with the added bonus of having fresh eggs. However, our current city ordinance limits us from embracing this.

Currently, city laws are preventing us from introducing our children to the sustainable practice of raising chickens. This ordinance unfairly restricts families wanting to provide hands-on nature learning experiences for their kids. We propose amending the city chicken ordinance to permit each household to have hens, with explicit prohibitions on roosters to maintain the peace and quiet in our neighborhoods.

Other cities require annual permits for having chickens, which is a great system for ensuring adherence to guidelines with the added bonus to create a source of revenue for the city.

Let's work together to help the next generation appreciate and understand the responsibilities and rewards of raising chickens. Please sign this petition to revise our city's chicken ordinance and help us instill valuable learning experiences for our children.

Hello — I talked with Kim Moore about the petition yesterday. I advised her to let the group know that they should come to a city council meeting and present the information during public comments. City Council meetings are held on the second and fourth Mondays of each month at 6:00 on the third floor of the Court House on Main Street. You all should come a little early and you have to sign up for Public Comments when you get there. Each person who signs up gets 4 minutes to address the council. If you have several points, have more than one person sign up for comments and divide up the information. Kim told me she could get a copy of the Lexington ordinance and I would bring copies of that, as well as copies of the petition, to distribute to the council (there are 8 council members, but you may want to have a few extra copies for the city attorney, etc.). As I mentioned to Kim, when you first come to council, you will be presenting information. The council will listen and may ask you some questions. The council will then discuss the issue (probably not on the same night you present), and decide whether to try to change the current ordinance. If the decision is to try to change the ordinance, there would be sponsors for the ordinance who would draft a new ordinance and that would be read at a council meeting, and then the second reading and vote would be at the next council meeting. Just want to manage expectations. Sounds like you have gathered a lot of interest and have done your homework. I look forward to seeing you at our council meeting. Tammy Lusby-Mitchell
