Revise Centenary Dr Maleny Pathway Design for Safety

Revise Centenary Dr Maleny Pathway Design for Safety
The issue
The proposed design for "Pathway Upgrade - Centenary Drive and Tallowwood Street, Maleny" is deeply concerning. It requires pedestrians to cross a busy road twice, without formal pedestrian crossings - endangering safety of pedestrians. If you want to access the Showgrounds via the access lane adjacent to 37 Centenary Dr, another crossing would also be required.
• High traffic volumes during peak hours (morning and late afternoon), when commuters use Centenary Drive as a cut-through route & at often at high speed, it is also used as a detour route in the event there is an issue in the main street.
• Centenary Drive is a 50km zone but the data collected presents a different case. In fact the average speed is 55-80km.
• Congestion during school pickup and drop-off times, when visibility is reduced, driver behaviour is often hurried, and many children and families are walking or cycling.
• The presence of local school bus route, which adds to both vehicle volume and unpredictable pedestrian movements at certain points.
Introducing multiple crossings along a busy and already constrained road corridor increases the risk of pedestrian-vehicle incidents.
As a resident of Maleny, I am particularly alarmed by the lack of consideration for pedestrian safety, accessibility, and practicality in this design. This area is frequented by families with children, elderly individuals, and people with mobility issues who all need a safe, reliable pathway.
Crossing the street twice along a busy section increases the risk of accidents and poses a significant barrier for those with limited mobility. Continuous pathways on one side would facilitate safer and easier movement for all pedestrians.
The goal of this petition is to urge the relevant authorities in Sunshine Coast Council to reconsider the current pathway design, prioritising a solution that maintains a continuous pedestrian path on one side of the road. This change would enhance safety, accessibility, and practicality, effectively serving the community's needs.
Sign this petition to push for a safer, more accessible pathway design that truly caters to the needs of Maleny's residents.
