The Issue

My daughter is currently studying in Grade VI under the CBSE Board, and as a concerned parent, I believe the new 3 Language Policy needs urgent revision. This policy mandates students to study two languages while considering English as a foreign language. However, English is the official language of India, widely used in all official documentation and communication across various sectors.

The existing policy deprives students of the opportunity to learn and gain international exposure through other foreign languages. If English is indeed considered an Indian language, then, as per the National Education Policy, CBSE should allow students to study foreign languages that can offer them broader cultural understanding and global perspectives.

In states like Haryana, where no other local language exists apart from Hindi, students are forced to study Sanskrit. Unfortunately, Sanskrit has limited utility in today’s world as it's not used in official or non-official communication. Its primary application is in reading religious texts, which are already available in Hindi. With the rapidly changing global environment, it's crucial for students to invest their time in learning languages that open doors to international opportunities rather than limiting their linguistic repertoire.

The current arrangement narrows down students' prospects of understanding foreign culture and hinders their ability to thrive in a globalized economy. By allowing the choice of a genuinely foreign language, students can have a more rounded and relevant educational experience. This will enrich their cultural awareness and enhance their communication skills on an international level.

Parents, educators, and the wider community should rally together to request CBSE to revise this policy. Ensuring that students have the option to choose a language that truly offers international exposure is not just beneficial for their personal growth but also aligns with India’s educational objectives of fostering global citizens.

Please sign this petition urging CBSE to reconsider and amend their 3 Language Policy, enabling a more inclusive and globally attuned language study that helps our children reach their fullest potential.
