Revise Business Hours to Facilitate Parental Responsibilities

Revise Business Hours to Facilitate Parental Responsibilities

The Issue

A majority of schools operate between 8 am to 5 pm, allowing parents to drop off their children as early as 7:30 am. Despite this, most businesses begin their workday between 6 am to 7 am, creating an undeniable discrepancy with parental responsibilities. This forces parents into a relentless juggling act between their professional and parental duties. To address this disparity, we propose an 8 am-4 pm general shift time. Understandably, not all businesses can accommodate this kind of change, but it should be made aware that flexibility is important not only for mental health, but also for children, parents, and overall work-life balance.

As a full-time parent, I understand firsthand the difficulty of scheduling our work lives around our commitments to our children. In the spirit of ensuring our children's welfare without compromising our professional duties, this petition urges businesses and companies to consider setting shifts that accommodate parents who need to align their schedules with their children's school timings. Businesses can provide more flexibility for parents to achieve a better work-life balance and earn an income, rather than relying on government assistance such as TANF.

This concept is not only good for families but also for businesses. A study by the Institute of Labour Economics showed that companies which offered flexible scheduling had employees that were more productive and loyal. By matching school hours with work hours, businesses would enhance parents' ability to fulfill both roles effectively, reducing the need for external support services and government assistance, and building healthier, happier communities.

We stand as parents, caregivers, and employees, asking businesses to recognize and adjust to the changing needs of the modern workforce and create a society where parents and children can thrive together. Please sign this petition to support the flexibility and adjustment of business working shifts to accommodate parent's schedules.

There are many shift variations. For example, a 24-hour business might have a night shift from 10 pm to 7 am, followed by a morning shift from 7 am to 3 pm, and then an evening shift from 3 pm to 10 pm. It would be beneficial to change the shifts to 11 pm-8 am, 8 am-4 pm, and 4 pm-11 pm. This simple 1-hour shift change can help support children's school schedules and their parents' work schedules. This is just an example of someone needing to work during the day
