Revise Beaverton School District’s block list

The Issue

Though some websites are blocked for a reason, most aren't a security threat and shouldn't be blocked. Many students in the Beaverton School District say that some of their favorite websites for creativity and learning are blocked. Most are completely safe for schoolwork, and this is why we should change the Block list!

For example, over 70% of people say that music boots their productivity, and people can listen to their music in headphones and there are several non-distracting music podcasts or lofi that can help with working. We, as students should be able to have a say in what's blocked and unblocked (Like a website to make suggestions or something similar).

Many students don't have or can't afford a home computer, so blocking entertainment on the only device they have disproportionately affects them and contradicts BSD's policy of inclusion.

Another thing that happens often is when the Lightspeed Filter Agent bans you for a certain amount of time on most or all websites because you 'visited too many blocked websites' when you haven't even recently entered one. The whole thing is pointless and frustrating for every student who has encountered the problem.

The unnecessary bans not only take away expression and creativity from students, but they are also an obstacle for teachers too, with several assignments originating from banned websites. Many teachers have encountered issues with giving out assignments that include going to a blocked website. These websites are useful in helping both students and teachers learn, and don't pose any security threats.

Join us in convincing the Beaverton School District to revise their Block list by reconsidering the current restrictions. Let's give ourselves the experience of having a place where creativity and learning can thrive without pointless bans.

Goals:

  • Unblocking websites that aren't inappropriate for children and/or don't cause any security violation
  • Unblocking websites that provide free educational resources for teachers and students alike
  • Creating a way for BSD citizens to suggest blocking and unblocking websites
