Revise §285-219 of Washington Township, NJ to Allow Backyard Chickens

Revise §285-219 of Washington Township, NJ to Allow Backyard Chickens
The Issue
My interest in amending township ordinances is deeply personal. Fresh, pasture-raised, and soy-free organic eggs are essential for my family's sustenance and we cherish sharing these with our neighbors. Furthermore, we discovered that keeping chickens in our backyard greatly helped in managing pest populations, such as ticks, contributing to our family's safety.
Our family is particular about sustainability practices. We regularly utilize eggshells to create natural tooth powder and the organic compost from the chickens further enables us to cultivate our vegetables and plants. My daughter has formed a strong emotional bond with these chickens, making them invaluable emotional support animals. However, the current §285-219 in Washington Township, NJ restricts our ability to raise these backyard chickens, putting our way of life at risk.
Surrounding townships have adopted more progressive and accommodating ordinances, enabling their residents to raise backyard chickens. The disconnect between our township's practices and those surrounding us creates unnecessary distress for families like mine. Let’s catch up with our neighbors. Many cities and municipalities recognize the importance of raising backyard chickens and have updated their rules accordingly.
We propose that the Washington Township reviews and revises §285-219 to reflect the more progressive and inclusive laws present in the surrounding areas. This is not only for my family but for all families in Washington Township who could significantly benefit from the sustainable and emotional advantages of raising backyard chickens. Sign this petition to support the amendment of §285-219 for backyard chicken keeping.
