Review the unduly lenient 21-year minimum sentence for the murder of Henry Nowak
The Issue
Henry Nowak was an innocent 18-year-old student with his whole life ahead of him. He was brutally stabbed five times and left to die, tearing a hole in his family and leaving our community completely heartbroken. A 21-year minimum sentence does not reflect the value of his life or the horror of this crime. I cannot stand by and watch a killer get a lenient sentence when Henry was denied his entire future. Henry deserves real justice, and his family deserves to know the community stands with them.
On that tragic day, our community lost not just a promising young life but also our sense of safety and justice. The current sentence sends a demoralizing message about how we value the lives of victims in our justice system. According to the Sentencing Council guidelines, life sentences should appropriately reflect the severity of the crime and the lasting impact on the victims' families. This sentence fails to meet those standards.
The Ministry of Justice has the authority to review sentences deemed unduly lenient. Past cases have seen similar reviews, resulting in harsher sentences when deemed necessary. We are calling on the Secretary of State for Justice to review and address this egregious miscarriage of justice. Correcting this sentence would not only honor Henry’s memory, but it would also restore faith in our justice system by ensuring that heinous crimes receive sentences that match their severity.
Henry’s murder has reverberated through schools, local sports clubs, and among neighbourhood friends. He was someone who brought joy and light to those around him, leaving an indelible mark on everyone he met. We owe it to him, his grieving family, and ourselves as a community to advocate for justice that feels just.
Let's show the Nowak family that they are not alone—our community demands a sentencing review. Sign this petition to ensure justice for Henry and to reinforce the integrity of our justice system. Every signature matters in our plea for a more just and compassionate society. Please sign and share this petition widely.
