Review the signage at MCR1 Vapes, Stevenson Square, Manchester

Review the signage at MCR1 Vapes, Stevenson Square, Manchester
The Issue
Stevenson Square in Manchester’s Northern Quarter is known for its historic charm, independent culture, and distinctive visual character. However, the signage recently installed at MCR1 Vapes is widely seen as out of keeping with the surrounding area. Its bright and overly aggressive design disrupts the visual harmony of the square and goes completely against the aesthetic that has made the Northern Quarter such a valued and recognisable part of the city.
Many residents, workers, and visitors feel the signage at MCR1 Vapes is unnecessarily brash and has become a visual eyesore within Stevenson Square.
To be clear, this petition is not calling for the business itself to close or be removed. We understand that MCR1 Vapes will have signed a lease, enjoy the protections granted from it, and have every right to operate from the premises. The request is simply that the current signage be reconsidered and redesigned so that it is more understated and in keeping with the character of the area.
There is also a broader question around the planning process. Signage of this nature should require advertisement consent through a planning application and be assessed on the basis of public safety and visual amenity. Many in the community find it difficult to understand how signage of this scale and style would have been approved in such a sensitive and distinctive part of the city. We believe the approval should be revisited and the application reopened and reviewed by the local planning authority.
We urge Manchester City Council and MCR1 Vapes to work collaboratively to review the signage and introduce a design that better reflects the character of Stevenson Square and the wider Northern Quarter.
By signing this petition, we are taking a step toward preserving the integrity and visual identity of one of Manchester’s most distinctive neighbourhoods.
