Review the New School Uniform Policy – Reduce Costs and Allow Unbranded Items
The Issue
We, the parents of pupils across East Midlands Academy Trust (EMAT) schools, wish to express our serious concerns regarding the new uniform policy announced for implementation from September.
While the official communication suggests that these changes are intended to provide “better value for money” and reduce the number of compulsory items, the reality for families is very different.
1. Significantly increased costs for parents
The new uniform introduces mandatory branded items, such as polo shirts and a “varsity-style” jacket, which are considerably more expensive than unbranded alternatives available in supermarkets and other retailers.
For example:
one polo shirt costs approximately £11
for a 5-day school week: £55
in comparison, 5 unbranded polo shirts can cost approximately £7.50
In addition, the compulsory jacket (~£26) further increases the overall cost, especially considering normal wear and tear or the likelihood of items being lost.
2. Unnecessary additional costs for families
Most parents have already invested in the current uniform, which now becomes unusable. This change imposes a sudden and unjustified financial burden, which can easily amount to hundreds of pounds per family.
For families with more than one child at the school, these costs multiply quickly, becoming a significant financial strain in a very short period of time.
3. Lack of meaningful parent consultation
This decision appears to have been made without transparent and meaningful consultation with parents, despite the direct financial impact on families.
Recent communication from the school has confirmed that, from September, only the new uniform will be permitted, requiring all parents to purchase the new items regardless of existing uniforms already owned.
This response has further increased concerns among parents, as it offers no flexibility, no transition period, and no consideration for the financial impact on families.
4. Practicality and comfort concerns
the removal of options such as cardigans reduces flexibility
the new style is perceived as less practical and less suitable for a school environment
moving away from a traditional uniform does not reflect the preferences of many parents
5. Inconsistency with official guidance
Department for Education guidance clearly states that schools must:
keep uniform costs reasonable
minimise compulsory branded items
consult parents before making significant changes
We believe these principles have not been adequately followed in the current proposal.
We call on the school and the Trust to:
Urgently review the new uniform policy
Allow a transition period during which the current uniform can still be worn
Reduce the number of compulsory branded items
Allow the use of unbranded polo shirts available from standard retailers
We request that the policy is reviewed and the varsity jacket remain optional.
Carry out a genuine and transparent consultation with parents before implementation
Ensure affordable options are available for all families
This petition reflects the genuine concerns of parents and a willingness to work collaboratively towards a fair, balanced, and affordable solution for all pupils.
Please sign this petition if you agree that these changes should be reconsidered. Together, we can ensure a fairer outcome for all families.
