The 'no deliberate physical contact' policy at Sydenham School has become a matter of concern for families with children at the school. New starters in September 2026 have been surprised, shocked and confused by this detail of the school's behaviour policy. It was not mentioned by the school before joining, nor was it clearly explained in the Home  School Agreement students signed when accepting their place.

The school's values aim to create a positive culture that promotes excellent behaviour. The school's Year 7 transition handout stated the aim to not set any detentions for Year 7 students at the start of the acedemic year to support with their transition. However, children are disproportionately reprimanded or punished for positive gestures of empathy, support and friendship, everyday social movements and innocent playtime interactions. Students are warned not too stand close to one another in case contact is made. The no-contact policy is being enforced with the same 'C3' punishment equated with verbal abuse and truancy. There is inconsistency in this policy's implementation across year groups, staff and the school's social media, which gives mixed messages and is creating confusion amongst students and parents. Instead of creating a positive culture, this policy is causing anxiety and concern for children's wellbeing, and risks impacting their social development and mental health in both the short and long term.  

We urge the Sydenham School administration and the school's educational policymakers to commit to an essential and urgent review of this policy and their approach to its enforcement.
