Review New Brunswick's school cellphone policy
The Issue
I am a student in New Brunswick who will be affected by the province’s new school cellphone policy. I understand that phones can be distracting in class and that schools need rules to make sure students are focused on learning. However, I believe the current policy is too restrictive and does not take into consideration how important technology has become in our everyday lives.
Students use our phones for much more than social media. They can be useful for research, calculators, educational apps, calendars, organization, communication, and many other things. Technology is already a huge part of education and our future careers, so completely restricting students from using these tools does not always make sense.
I also believe that every school and every student is different. There can be situations where a student may need access to their phone for an important reason, such as communicating with family, using an accessibility tool, dealing with a safety situation, or completing schoolwork. There should be reasonable flexibility for these situations.
Most importantly, students deserve to have a say in policies that directly affect us. We are the ones who experience these rules every day, so our opinions and experiences should matter when decisions about our schools are being made.
I am asking the Government of New Brunswick to review the current cellphone policy and meaningfully listen to students, teachers, parents, and school staff. Instead of having one rule that applies exactly the same way everywhere, we should consider a more balanced approach that allows schools to have some flexibility while still making sure phones do not interfere with learning.
This does not mean students should be allowed to use their phones whenever they want during class. It means finding a reasonable middle ground. Schools could have designated times for phone use, allow phones for specific educational purposes, and make sure students with legitimate needs can access their devices when necessary.
