Review Maharashtra's School Vacation Calendar in Light of Changing Climate
The Issue
Our Primary Request
We urge the Government of Maharashtra to constitute an Expert Committee to scientifically review the State's school academic calendar and vacation schedule in view of changing climate patterns.
Why Is This Important?
- Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Palghar and other Konkan districts experience frequent heavy rainfall during June and July.
- Every monsoon, IMD Orange and Red Alerts force district administrations to declare sudden school and college holidays.
- These unplanned closures disrupt:
- Classroom teaching
- Unit tests and examinations
- Academic planning
- Parents' daily schedules
- School administration
- Student safety rightly remains the top priority, but repeated emergency closures have become a recurring challenge.
Times Have Changed
- The current April–May vacation schedule was introduced decades ago when classrooms lacked electricity, fans and adequate ventilation.
- Today, most schools have electricity, ceiling fans and improved infrastructure.
- Many urban schools are also equipped with air-conditioned classrooms.
- At the same time, climate patterns have changed significantly, making it appropriate to review whether the existing academic calendar still serves students in the best possible way.
What We Request
We request the Government to:
- Constitute an Expert Committee with representatives from the School Education Department, IMD, Disaster Management Authority, Educationists, Parents and School Managements.
- Conduct a scientific study on the impact of changing weather patterns on education.
- Examine district-wise climatic differences before considering any policy changes.
- Evaluate practical options such as:
- A shorter summer vacation.
- A short vacation during the peak monsoon in high-rainfall districts.
- Region-specific academic calendars.
- Pilot projects before any statewide implementation.
Expected Benefits
- Improved student safety.
- Fewer emergency school closures.
- Better continuity in teaching and examinations.
- Reduced administrative burden.
- Better planning for schools, teachers and parents.
- An education system that adapts to changing climate conditions.
Our Position
❌ We are not demanding an immediate change to the existing vacation schedule.
✅ We are requesting an independent, scientific and evidence-based review so that future decisions are guided by data, expert consultation and the best interests of students across Maharashtra.
If you believe Maharashtra's school calendar should be reviewed in light of today's climate realities, please sign and share this petition. Together, we can encourage a thoughtful, evidence-based discussion for the benefit of students, parents, teachers and future generations.
