Review IGCSE Chemistry Paper 2 on June 12 2026
The Issue
I, along with a multitude of my peers, devoted countless hours in revising for the IGCSE Chemistry Paper 2 exam, only to be met with questions that were disproportionately difficult. Our efforts were not recognised nor rewarded as anticipated. We diligently prepared using past papers which typically follow a predictable pattern, thereby helping us to consolidate our understanding and application of the subject. However, this year's paper starkly differed from precedents set in the last six years.
Students globally rely on the consistency of IGCSE exams, which are designed to test one's understanding based on what has been taught throughout the course. Yet, this drastic deviation from the established norm created unnecessary stress and confusion among students, undermining our preparation and study strategies. This irregularity was particularly unfair during a time when student mental health is already under significant pressure due to the pandemic and other academic challenges.
There is a growing concern among candidates and educators alike that the current format did not provide a true reflection of a student’s capability or the curriculum taught. The impact of such a paper extends beyond grades—it affects our future education decisions and career pathways, which could be unfavorably altered by this single exam experience.
We urge the Pearson Edexcel International Examinations board to conduct a thorough review of the IGCSE Chemistry Paper 2 for this examination session. Our request is to ensure fair grading that considers the unprecedented level of difficulty, and to make necessary adjustments to the mark scheme that would better represent student effort and understanding.
This appeal not only seeks rectification for this particular paper but also calls for enhanced transparency and communication regarding future exam formats to prevent such issues from reoccurring. It is essential that exam boards maintain the integrity and fairness of their assessments to uphold the trust that students, teachers, and parents place in the system.
Please join us in calling for a fair review of the IGCSE Chemistry Paper 2 by signing this petition. Let us ensure that grade boundaries fairly exemplify the effort put into revising for this exam.
