The Issue

UPrep is introducing a new 7-period class schedule for the 2026-2027 school year, which will dramatically alter the existing structure of student education. This change compounds stress and pressure on students, adding unnecessary classes to an already dense and challenging 6-period schedule.

In our current 6-period schedule, students are already enrolled in a vigorous curriculum that demands their full attention and effort. The introduction of an additional period will not only increase academic load but also severely impact students' well-being and mental health by reducing necessary downtime.

Moreover, an earlier start time to accommodate this scheduling is detrimental to students' sleep patterns. By enforcing an earlier start, we risk exacerbating sleep deprivation, which can lead to lower attention spans, reduced cognitive ability, and heightened stress.

Additionally, the new scheduling format proposes only one "intensive" course, failing to enhance the learning experience and needlessly cramming the second semester. This format raises concerns about the timing of final exams, as the possibility of having finals after the winter break may displace students' ability to prepare, potentially affecting their performance. Research consistently shows that lengthy breaks before exams can disrupt retention of information and negatively impact student outcomes.

The planned change to the 7-period schedule does not adequately consider the negative impacts on students' health and learning quality. Therefore, we urge UPrep to reconsider and retain the 6-period schedule, which maintains a balance between academic rigor and students' physical and mental well-being.

Sign this petition to support our students’ health and academic success by advocating for the return to a 6-period school schedule at UPrep. Together, we can protect our children from undue stress and ensure their education sets the foundation for a healthier future.
