Revert to the Original Graduation Song in Honolulu Schools

The Issue

As a graduate of the class of 2024, I am deeply troubled by the recent change in our graduation song. The new and current song was released before our graduates were born and does not resonate with them or their experiences. This is a personal issue for me as I believe that music plays an integral part in marking significant milestones such as graduation.

The original graduation song was selected by the graduates, and they were content with the song prior to its change. It's more than just a melody; it's a symbol of accomplishment and unity among students who have worked tirelessly to reach this point in their lives.

The new song lacks this significance and connection with our students. According to research conducted by scholars at the University of Southern California, songs that are personally relevant or connected to specific life events can evoke stronger emotional responses (USC News). By replacing the traditional graduation song with one that doesn't hold any relevance for our graduates, we are potentially diminishing the emotional impact of this momentous occasion.

We urge the school board to reconsider its decision and revert back to using the original graduation song during commencement ceremony. Let's ensure that the graduating class feels recognized and celebrated through music they can connect with. Please sign this petition if you stand for preserving the decision to choose our song and the meaning behind it.
