REVERT TO LAST YEAR'S DRESS CODE
The Issue
Petition: Ocean Charter School Administration Must Revert to Last Year’s Dress Code Immediately
In just the first week of school, the enforcement of the new dress code has created an environment of anxiety and surveillance that directly harms our children. Girls as young as six are now afraid to play on the monkey bars for fear their shirts will rise up. Multiple students have already been pulled from class, subjected to physical inspections in the gymnasium, and forced into oversized "shame clothing" provided by the office. This has quickly led to playground taunting, with kids pointing and yelling, "You got dress-coded!"
Instead of focusing on learning, our children are being taught to fear ordinary movement. This policy disproportionately targets female students. Reports from parents, staff, and students confirm that girls are overwhelmingly singled out under these new restrictions on exposed skin—rules that inherently police girls' bodies.
This approach is unacceptable and contradicts the safe, supportive environment Ocean Charter School promises. We demand that the Administration immediately halt these inspections and revert to last year’s dress code. This reversion must remain in place until a new policy can be thoughtfully co-created through a DEIBC lens, with meaningful input from students, parents, and staff. Our children deserve to go to school without fearing adult scrutiny over their bodies.
