The Issue

As a student at Stephen F. Austin State University, I am deeply concerned about the recent changes to the on-campus student housing rules. These new regulations threaten my ability, and the ability of many fellow students, to secure the on-campus housing that is crucial for our academic success. With the new rules in place, many students may be left without the affordable and convenient living arrangements that are necessary for us to continue our education effectively.

Stephen F. Austin State University has always been known for its supportive campus community. However, with the implementation of these new housing rules, many students find themselves at risk of losing housing that they need to continue their studies. This not only disrupts our lives and studies but also adds unnecessary stress and financial strain on many students and their families.

The importance of affordable on-campus housing cannot be overstated. Studies have shown that students who live on campus generally have higher GPAs and are more likely to graduate on time compared to their off-campus peers. On-campus living provides a unique community atmosphere where students can easily access academic resources, participate in campus activities, and build essential social networks.

The new rules seem to favor incoming freshmen and those with specific financial means, which undermines the inclusivity and equality that should be hallmarks of our university's values. We believe that all students, regardless of their financial background, deserve a fair chance to benefit from on-campus housing.

We urge the administration of Stephen F. Austin State University to reconsider these new housing rules. By reverting to the previous regulations, the university can maintain its commitment to providing an inclusive and supportive environment for all students.

I call on my fellow students, faculty, alumni, and concerned citizens to join me in this cause. By signing this petition, you can make your voice heard and help bring about the necessary change to ensure that every student has the opportunity to live and learn in a supportive on-campus environment.
