Revert SCPS Block Schedule

Revert SCPS Block Schedule
The Issue
August 16th, 2023
This is now newly edited as of August 16th, 2023. I’ve heard word going around that Principal Blasewitz (Lake Brantley High School’s Principal) did not want to do block for our school and that Seminole County had merely forced it upon him to do so. As this is being written and if that rumor is true, I deeply apologize to Principal Blasewitz for the inconvenience; on the other hand, SCPS shouldn’t force schools to go block. This petition can spread to every Seminole County Public School for not just our regards as students of Lake Brantley High School, but now as students, parents, and teachers of all Seminole County Public Schools. For what was written will remain, with the exception that more schools can and should be involved in the Seminole County district entirely if the students, parents, and teachers from schools within the district agree with my points and claim given throughout this petition. If you strongly agree or somewhat agree accordingly to what was written in the petition, feel free to sign and share to many Seminole County Public School students, parents, and teachers. We (LBHS students) still very strongly believe that block only makes the education system more difficult on students, teachers, and parents alike. For which was originally written for and by Brantley students will now be spread to Seminole County Public Schools as a whole.

As students of Lake Brantley High School, we believe that the recent switch to a block schedule has had a negative impact on our education and overall well-being. As a senior, remembering my freshman year including a block schedule, it had affected my own education poorly. The block schedule in the eyes of many other students see it as "confusing" or "ridiculous". In addition, the break felt very important to students because, that would be the only good interaction between students and students, students and faculty and staff. So, we are petitioning for Lake Brantley High School to revert back to the original 1-7 daily schedule.
The block schedule will cause several issues for students, including:
1. Longer class periods - With classes lasting around 90 minutes instead of the casual 44-46 minutes, it can be difficult for students to stay focused and engaged for such an extended period of time.
2. Limited course options - The block schedule limits the number of courses that can be taken in a year, making it harder for students to explore different subjects and interests.
3. Inconsistent schedules - With classes rotating every other day, it can be hard for students to keep track of their schedules and assignments.
4. Increased stress - The longer class periods and limited course options have caused increased stress levels among students, which can negatively impact their mental health and academic performance.
5. Responsiblity - This is very important for students to advance as well educated members in society once we find responsibility. For example, it is our responsibility to turn in a homework assignment the next day. Although at times some students may forget, it is their responsibility to get things done at a specific time before proper due date. This will teach students that we shouldn't need more days to turn in homework. Especially, considering that our memory may not be fresh returning back to the same class after not having the chance to be there the day prior, due to the block schedule.
We believe that reverting back to the original 1-7 daily schedule will fix these issues and provide a better learning environment for all students at LBHS. We urge school administrators to consider our concerns and make this change as soon as possible.
