Revert Kyhv Peak to its Original, Historic Name, Squaw Peak

Revert Kyhv Peak to its Original, Historic Name, Squaw Peak

The Issue

This campaign stands out as a deeply personal cause to me, as my ancestors, true pioneers of their era, journeyed across the vast American plains and battled the harsh environment of the Rocky Mountains. Upon settling in the lush Utah Valley, they christened a majestic mountain "Squaw Peak" in the 1850s. This was forty years before Utah was formally recognized as a state in the United States in 1896.

This name has stood the test of time, standing as a monument to our collective ancestors' journey. Nonetheless, in 2022, the Biden administration employed federal powers to arbitrarily alter the name Squaw Peak to Kyhv Peak. This was not subjected to a popular vote, which strikes me as an attempt to erase a profound part of Utah's revered history, thereby depriving future generations of their rightful claim to their heritage.

The silence and invisibility of the common man in this significant alteration is alarming. The renaming maneuver made a mockery of the democratic principles we hold dear. We call on all fellow Utahns, historians, geographers, academics, or anyone who values the preservation of historical memory, to rally behind us.

I humbly appeal to the powers of government, specifically the National Park Service and the U.S. Board on Geographic Names to reconsider their decision. We ask that the name of Squaw Peak be restored, honoring the Settlers that named it and the Americans who continue to live in its shadow. This is a case not just for an old, historical name, but for a shining beacon of democracy - the right of the people, the will of the majority, to have a say in shaping the contours of their history. We cordially invite you to stand up for this cause and sign our petition.
