The Issue

January 2025

Our community is facing a significant challenge. Walgreens, one of the few reliable resources for shopping, employment and medicine needs, has decided to close five stores in predominantly Black and brown Chicago neighborhoods. This decision affects us profoundly. We are left wondering - where do we go from here?

The locations facing closure between February 17 and 27 are: 7111 South Western Avenue (West Englewood), 4005 West 26th Street (Little Village), 9148 South Commercial Avenue (South Chicago), 3405 South King Drive (Bronzeville) and 7109 South Jeffery Boulevard (South Shore).

For many, especially our senior population, this decision can be life-changing, as they rely on local pharmacies to fill essential prescriptions. We should not have to go out of our community to shop. This decision is unjust as it noticeably excludes Chicago neighborhoods that are predominantly white and have multiple Walgreens locations.

We urge Walgreens to consider the impact of the company's decision to divest from our communities, prioritize the needs of long time customers and halt the impending closure of these five stores. Let us raise our voices against this injustice. Please sign this petition and demand that Walgreens reverse its decision.
