The Issue

Hello everyone,

As the student representative (JCR) and like many students at the University of Ghana, We are deeply concerned about the recent hike in our hall fees. This abrupt increase is affecting not just our financial stability but the livelihoods of many other students who call the university hostel (Pent) their home. Over the past five years, we've witnessed exorbitant fee raises, yet improvements to our accommodations remain nonexistent.

For most of us, the university provides an opportunity for quality education and a better future. However, the sudden increase in hostel fees is making it increasingly difficult for students to afford staying on campus, a necessity for many due to the demanding nature of our studies. The burden placed on us as students, many of whom hail from modest backgrounds, is simply unsustainable.

We've heard arguments justifying this increase, yet they fail to account for the inadequate conditions we still endure. Basic amenities remain unchanged; rooms haven’t been renovated, facilities like toilets, kitchens, and common areas have not seen any upgrades. These living conditions do not match the financial demands now being imposed.

The Joint Committee of Residents (JCR) has initiated this petition to bring our plight to the attention of the school management and other stakeholders. We seek a revision of these fees to a more reasonable rate, one that reflects the living conditions provided, and to urge management to undertake necessary improvements across all hostels.

By signing this petition, you are not only supporting students in dire need but also advocating for fairness and equity within our university community. We can only hope that with enough voices, our call for change will be heard loud and clear.

Please sign and help us reclaim our right to affordable and decent on-campus housing. Your support is invaluable, and together, we can drive change.
