Reverse the School Board's Decision to Ban the Traveling Song at Graduation

Reverse the School Board's Decision to Ban the Traveling Song at Graduation
The Issue
For many students, graduation is more than just a ceremony. It is a monumental milestone that signifies years of hard work, dedication, and growth. It marks the transition from one chapter of their lives to another, opening doors to new opportunities and possibilities. The fulfillment of dreams and aspirations are embodied in this momentous occasion filled with pride, excitement, and anticipation for the future.
However, recently our school board at Hinckley-Finlayson made an unexpected decision not to allow our drum group from performing this cherished tradition at graduation ceremonies anymore. This decision has deeply affected us as it feels like an integral part of our celebration has been taken away. This song holds significant cultural value and contributes greatly to making these ceremonies memorable. The Native American students are a significant population at HFHS. Our songs of honoring do not serve us as Native's alone, we sing for everyone when honoring student achievements.
According to data from Minnesota Department of Education (2019), there are over 33 thousand Native American students in Minnesota public schools who could be directly impacted by such decisions that disregard cultural traditions.
We believe that every student should have their culture respected and celebrated especially during important milestones like graduation. Therefore we urge you all – parents, teachers, students – everyone who believes in preserving traditions that make each student's journey unique - join us in asking the school board to reverse their decision on banning the traveling song at graduations.
Let's ensure every student can celebrate their achievements with pride while honoring their cultural heritage. Please sign this petition today!
