The Issue

Having grown up in a family where every dollar counts, I understand firsthand the challenges faced by low-income individuals trying to pursue higher education. Education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty, and for many in Ontario, the Ontario Student Assistance Program (OSAP) is the only lifeline that makes attending college or university a possibility.

Recently, changes were announced to the OSAP funding model, a decision that has left me—and countless others—reeling. Specifically the changes in funding. Not only do these changes drastically reduce the financial assistance available to those who most need it, but they also impose stricter conditions that will make it even harder for low-income students to access post-secondary education. This is an unfair blow to every student starting their academic journey just as these changes are taking effect.

And the truth is, this doesn’t just affect the students in college now. it affects every young person in Ontario, as anyone can end up with financial difficulties throughout their young life.

The reality is stark: without sufficient financial aid, many aspiring students will find themselves unable to afford tuition, books, and living expenses. Statistics indicate that Ontario has one of the highest tuition rates in Canada. According to the Canadian Federation of Students, average undergraduate tuition fees in Ontario are over $8,000. The increased financial burden could force many to abandon their dreams or graduate with insurmountable debt.

Education is not a privilege but a right, and it is pivotal for the growth and development of our society. By reducing the financial barriers to education, we encourage a more diverse and enriched learning environment. Post-secondary education should be accessible to everyone, regardless of their financial background.

I urge the Ontario government and the Ministry of Colleges and Universities to reconsider these changes to OSAP. Instead of restricting access, we should be looking at ways to make education more accessible and affordable for all Ontarians.

Please join me in asking our leaders to reverse these changes, ensuring that every student has the opportunity to pursue their academic aspirations without financial fear. Sign this petition to stand up for accessible and equitable education for all in Ontario.
