The Issue

Every life, whether it walks on two legs or four, is precious. Having grown up watching stray dogs wag their tails at my greetings and cattle rustling through sunlit fields, I have come to appreciate the invaluable role they play in our ecosystem and daily lives. They rely on us—humans—for protection, sustenance, and love, though unable to articulate their needs with words. It aches my heart to witness their struggles and sufferings, exacerbated by legislations that seem oblivious to their silent pleas.

The recent Supreme Court judgement against stray dogs is not only seen as cruel but also raises serious moral and ethical concerns. Stray animals, much like humans, have a fundamental right to live without fear of unwarranted harm or death. They contribute to the community in ways that are often overlooked—they help maintain balance in the urban wildlife, prevent other pest populations from growing unmanageable, and offer companionship.

Numerous statistics indicate that humane, well-structured animal control programs have led to healthier communities in countries that advocate animal welfare. According to a 2021 report by the World Health Organization, regions implementing sterilization, vaccination, and community awareness programs recorded notable reductions in both stray populations and associated public health risks.

Instead of resorting to harsh measures, we should explore and support more humane alternatives. Sterilization and vaccination drives, public education on animal rights, and inclusive well-funded shelters can transform our cities into more compassionate places. Several NGOs and community initiatives have successfully championed such models, improving both human and animal lives. We can and should follow their lead.

Let us urge the Supreme Court to revisit and reconsider its judgement on stray animals carefully. Let us emphasize compassion and coexistence over conflict and eradication. Sign this petition to safeguard our voiceless companions who deserve life, protection, and dignity like every other living being on this planet. Together, we can be their voice and hope. Please sign and share this appeal.
