Reverse the New Phone Ban in Matsuk district

Reverse the New Phone Ban in Matsuk district
The Issue
In Wasilla, AK, we're grappling with a new board policy that prohibits phone use during lunches, and it's affecting us all. As a student, I find it incredibly frustrating not being able to use my phone during lunch breaks. Lunchtime is one of the few breaks we have in our busy school day when we can communicate with friends or contact our family members if needed.
There have been instances when emergencies arise, and not having access to my phone has been a genuine safety concern. Imagine not being able to reach a family member or emergency services when it matters the most. This policy not only limits our freedom but also impedes our ability to manage personal affairs responsibly during school hours.
Research shows that controlled use of personal devices can actually be beneficial for students, offering them a necessary break and allowing them to develop time management and responsibility skills. Schools like those in neighboring districts have successfully integrated phones into their daily schedules without issues. According to a study by the School Superintendents Association (AASA), around 66% of schools allow students to use phones during non-instructional times, reporting a positive impact on student life and responsibilities.
Rather than an outright ban, we advocate for a more balanced approach where phones can be used during convenient and appropriate breaks like lunch periods. This way, we can ensure that students still have the opportunity to communicate when necessary without disrupting the educational environment.
Let’s push for a revision of the current policy to allow phone use during lunch, ensuring that students can stay connected with their families and the wider world. Sign this petition to urge Matsuk school board to consider a policy that respects students’ rights and addresses genuine safety concerns.
