U-turn on the decision to merge Gedling, Rushcliffe and Broxtowe into the city.
The Issue
We are deeply concerned about the decision made on the 16th of July by the Labour government, supported by James Naish MP, Michael Payne MP, and Juliet Campbell MP, to incorporate Gedling, Rushcliffe, and Broxtowe into the city. This decision feels short sighted and disregards the financial mismanagement that has plagued the city in the past.
For years, our communities have thrived with their unique identities and local governance, separate from the city's issues. Bringing us under the city's umbrella risks diluting the distinct character of Gedling, Rushcliffe, and Broxtowe. It's crucial that we maintain autonomy over our local decisions and budgets, especially in light of recent fiscal irresponsibility demonstrated by the city.
Over 25,000 people signed our previous petitions but these have fallen on deaf ears, we must act again to tell the Labour government that we will not accept their decision and we encourage local council leaders to do all they can to stop this and force the Labour government into a U-turn.
The financial challenges faced by the city should not be offloaded onto our shoulders. Instead, we should be focusing on protecting the progress and well-being of our communities. This forced merging does not take into account the potential negative impact on public services, which are likely to suffer from a stretched city budget.
Additionally, this decision was made without proper consultation with the residents of Gedling, Rushcliffe, and Broxtowe. Our voices and concerns were overlooked. Transparency and community involvement are essential in decisions that alter the very fabric of our day-to-day lives.
We urge everyone who values our communities, their well-being, and good financial management to join us in opposing this change. By reversing this decision, we can safeguard our communities' future, ensuring that local governance remains in the hands of those who understand our needs best.
Sign this petition to call on the government to U-Turn on the slicing up of Gedling, Rushcliffe, and Broxtowe. Let us stand together to protect our community's integrity and autonomy. One thing that could be considered:
