Reverse the Decision to End Hackettstown's Video Production Program

Reverse the Decision to End Hackettstown's Video Production Program
The Issue
Mrs. Tomasini's Video Production class at Hackettstown High School was more than just an elective for me—it was a haven during challenging times. As a graduate now attending Montclair State University, majoring in Film & Television, I can confidently say her class sparked my interest in what is now my career path. The skills and knowledge imparted in that room have been instrumental not only in my academic pursuits but also at my internship, where I continue to apply what I learned.
The Hackettstown Board of Education's decision to terminate the Video Production program is a disservice to current and future students who might find similar comfort and inspiration as I did. This program is not just about learning how to handle a camera; it’s an opportunity to develop technical skills, emotional intelligence, teamwork, and creativity. For many students, having a creative outlet is crucial for both personal growth and mental well-being. Shutting down this program strips them of an opportunity to explore potential career paths and discover hidden talents.
Studies have shown that arts education plays a significant role in improving educational outcomes. According to a report by the Arts Education Partnership, students involved in arts learning experiences score better on standardized tests, have better attendance records, and show higher rates of graduation and college enrollment. Eliminating this program would mean going against these proven benefits.
The rationale behind this decision is unclear, but the negative implications are apparent. Reversing this decision is not just about saving a program; it's about investing in the future of our students and their success in an increasingly competitive world. The Board needs to consider alternative solutions to budget constraints that do not involve sacrificing the educational tools and opportunities that Video Production provides.
Please join me in urging the Hackettstown Board of Education to revisit and reverse their decision. Let’s ensure that future generations of students have the opportunity to benefit from the invaluable lessons offered by the Video Production program. Your signature can make a difference. Sign this petition to demand the preservation and continuation of Hackettstown High School's Video Production program.
