Reverse the CAA’s decision to change VLOS to direct line of site

The Issue

As a passionate drone hobbyist and a small business owner, I am deeply concerned about the Civil Aviation Authority's (CAA) recent decision to change the Visual Line of Sight (VLOS) operations to Direct Line of Sight (DLOS). This abrupt change places unnecessary restrictions on hobbyists and small businesses like mine. Under the new DLOS rule, pilots must maintain direct eye contact with their drones at all times, which nullifies the convenience and safety offered by using onboard cameras without an additional spotter.

This change imposes a significant burden on small operators and hobbyists who cannot afford to hire additional personnel for spotting. In contrast, larger corporations with more resources can easily absorb this extra cost, creating an unfair playing field that disproportionately disadvantages individuals and small businesses. The aerial photography and videography industry, which heavily relies on drones for creative and commercial projects, will suffer as accessibility decreases and operational costs skyrocket for independent operators.

Moreover, this decision undermines the progress and innovation in the drone industry. The very essence of drone technology is to provide a unique aerial perspective that is both safe and accessible. By enforcing DLOS, the CAA is stifling creativity and hindering economic growth within the sector, as small operators play a significant role in driving innovation and exploring new applications for drones.

The safety concerns addressed by the DLOS requirement can be mitigated through other, less restrictive measures. For instance, enhanced pilot training, improved communication technologies, and the implementation of geo-fencing solutions can ensure safe drone operations without imposing harsh restrictions on those who rely on drone technology for their livelihoods.

Therefore, I urge the CAA to reverse this decision and reinstate the VLOS regulations. By doing so, we can maintain safety standards, promote fairness, and support the growth and vibrancy of the drone industry. Please sign this petition to stand with hobbyists, small businesses, and innovation in our skies. Let us work together to advocate for a balanced approach that considers all stakeholders' interests.
