The Issue

In today's world, the need for connectivity is greater than it's ever been. As a high school student in Kansas City, I find myself relying on my phone for more than just communication. It's an essential tool for safety, staying informed, and connecting with my family during emergencies or significant family events. The recent decision to ban phones in high schools across Kansas City has become a pressing concern not only for my family but for everyone alike.

My phone is my lifeline. Whether it's responding to a family emergency or simply ensuring my parents know I'm safe, the ability to communicate via my phone provides a crucial sense of security and peace of mind. It's not just for phone calls or texts; smartphones have apps that can notify me of severe weather warnings, school activities, and provide other important information I need throughout my day.

Furthermore, in situations requiring urgent communication, such as family emergencies, having immediate access to our phones is vital. Limiting students' access can lead to panic and uncertainty in cases where quick communication is necessary. A majority of students across the country feel the same, with a 78% agreement rate in a 2022 survey conducted by the Education Data Initiative stating that mobile phones contribute positively to their education.

Repealing this ban doesn't mean allowing unrestricted use; it means instituting reasonable policies that balance classroom concentration with the necessary access to communication. Schools can implement specific guidelines to ensure phones are used responsibly, such as permitting them only during non-instructional times or emergencies. This approach has successfully been practiced in many educational institutions across the nation, providing a blueprint for responsible management.

Inarguably, technology is an integral part of education. Access to information at their fingertips can enhance a student's learning experience and allow them to explore subjects further. Banning phones outright denies students of Kansas City the educational benefits technology offers, which can be pivotal in their success in future academic pursuits.

Urging the Kansas City School District to reconsider their position is about ensuring safety, maximizing educational potential, and adapting to the realities of modern life. Let's advocate for a policy that reflects this balance. Please join me in voicing the collective need to keep phones available for emergencies and educational purposes by signing this petition.
