Reverse the Ban on Feeding Birds in Our Cities

Reverse the Ban on Feeding Birds in Our Cities
The Issue
Stop the Fines for Bird Feeding in Vancouver
I am a resident of Vancouver, and like many others, I find solace in feeding birds. It's a hobby that has been passed down through generations and has proven benefits for mental health. However, recent laws have imposed fines of $4000 on those who feed birds in our city.
Birds are not wild animals. For centuries, people have enjoyed the simple pleasure of providing food for these creatures. As winter approaches, many species including pigeons rely heavily on human aid for sustenance. The enforcement of this ban not only threatens these birds but also harasses those who wish to help them.
While we understand the concerns about potential negative impacts on wildlife, it is important to note that city life often offers birds junk food and leftovers which are more harmful than clean seeds - their natural diet. The fines seem disproportionate when compared to other activities permitted in our parks such as consuming alcohol or drugs which cause greater harm and mess.
Our city faces major issues from housing affordability to high cost of living. We believe resources could be better utilized addressing these problems rather than penalizing citizens for engaging with nature.
Studies show birdwatching and feeding can significantly reduce stress levels (source: American Journal of Public Health). In times where mental health is a growing concern, shouldn't we promote activities that contribute positively?
We urge the City Council to reconsider these fines and instead focus on educating citizens about responsible bird feeding practices. Let's create an environment where people can continue their harmless hobbies without fear of hefty penalties.
Please sign this petition if you believe in preserving this age-old tradition while maintaining balance with nature.
