The Issue

Hello everyone,

I am a 62-year-old student currently enrolled in a Level 3 course at Open University. Recently, I was shocked to learn that individuals over the age of 60 are no longer eligible for university funding. Thankfully, I am allowed to complete my studies as I am already a student, but what about others like me who have dedicated their lives to contributing to our society?

Many of us over 60 have spent decades working hard, paying taxes, supporting the economy, and raising the next generation of taxpayers. My husband, for instance, dedicated 40 years working in a hospital, enduring early mornings, late nights, and night shifts with the hope that one day he could retire and pursue a lifelong dream of furthering his education. This recent decision has shattered such dreams and stifled opportunities for countless others.

I came to this country from Russia two decades ago to escape a government that employed dictatorial tactics. I took that leap of faith to build a future for my family, believing in the values of freedom and opportunity. But this decision feels like a betrayal, making me question the safety of my future. If the government can cut educational funding now, what stops them from reducing our pensions later in the name of austerity?

Restricting university funding for those over 60 is not just an age-related issue; it singles out a community that deserves every right to education as a basic human right. Statistics from The Office for National Statistics show that people are working longer and living healthier. Education can provide this demographic with a sense of purpose, mental stimulation, and contribute even further to the community.

We respectfully urge policymakers to reconsider this age restriction. Older adults should have the chance to engage in lifelong learning and fulfill new ambitions just like everyone else. Together, we can create a learning community where all ages thrive.

Please join me by signing this petition, so we can bring attention to this pressing issue and work toward a more inclusive future for higher education.
