The Issue

Having a child in public school in Lawrence County, TN, I've always ensured that school isn't something to miss unless absolutely necessary. My child, like many others, attends regular medical appointments, including those focused on mental health. We consider ourselves fortunate that extended illnesses have not been an issue yet, but I am genuinely concerned. The newly enforced absentee policy is disproportionately harsh, allowing no excused absences whatsoever. Even doctor’s notes are disregarded, marking each absence as unjustified, and once a student hits the three-absence mark, the serious and invasive truancy process begins.

The truancy process itself is deeply worrisome, involving the Department of Child Services, demanding interventions, and having severe consequences like the risk of being held back a grade or missing significant events like prom and graduation. This policy forces parents and students into an impossible situation choosing between education and health, while compromising both.

This blanket policy, lacking in common sense, doesn’t consider individual circumstances or real circumstances children and their families face. It treats all scenarios as being the same without regard to legitimate health issues that necessitate staying home. If children are advised by medical professionals to stay home to prevent spreading illnesses, adhering to this policy contradicts expert advice, potentially increasing health risks within schools.

Across the country, schools understand the complexities around absenteeism and provide allowances for unavoidable medical absences with proper documentation. Yet, this district's approach is unyielding, seemingly aimed at reducing absentee numbers on paper rather than genuinely nurturing student welfare.

For the betterment of our children, educational atmosphere, and preserving the health standards we strive to maintain, this policy must be reconsidered to allow for reasonable, documented absences that don't penalize students for circumstances often out of their control.

Sign this petition to call for a reevaluation and overturning of this impractical absentee policy in Lawrence County Schools, to protect both the educational opportunities and health of our students.
