The Issue

The recent Supreme Court decision to leash street dogs in Delhi and NCR and prevent them from returning to public spaces is totally impractical. There are incidents of dogs saving lives, preventing theft, and even protecting young girls from assault. Not all dogs are the same, and we need stray dogs in our society for the positive roles they play.

The recent Supreme Court decision to leash street dogs in Delhi and NCR and prevent them from returning to public spaces is a devastating blow to our society’s compassion and empathy towards animals. While rabies is a concern, painting all stray dogs with the same brush is unfair and inhumane. Just like there are men who commit heinous acts yet aren't representative of all men, stray dogs too should not be generalised based on a few negative incidents.

According to animal welfare organizations, sterilization and vaccination are proven strategies for managing stray dog populations without resorting to harsh measures. The World Health Organization advocates these methods as more effective and humane solutions, recommending community involvement to handle the issue.

Moreover, eliminating stray dogs from the public domain negatively impacts the ecosystem, affecting biodiversity and disrupting the balance between various species. The sudden removal of stray dogs can lead to a surge in other pests such as rats, historically shown through ecological studies.

Instead of a blanket ban, authorities should focus on humane and sustainable solutions like community dog care programs and public education on co-existing with stray animals safely. Countries worldwide have successfully implemented such measures, blending both safety and compassion.

Urge the Supreme Court and local authorities to reconsider their decision, embrace humane methods, and allow stray dogs to coexist with us peacefully and safely. Their presence is an integral part of our community and contributes to the vibrant diversity of our streets.

Please sign this petition to ensure that these loyal companions are not unjustly banished and that our sense of humanity is preserved.
