As of 2026, Roblox has released an update requiring all users to undergo a facial recognition procedure entirely run by AI, in order to continue chatting with others on Roblox. If they are deemed a certain age, they will only be able to talk to other players in the same age group.

What is the problem with this?

• AI facial recognition is extremely unreliable, often putting children in adult groups, and even worse, putting adults in underage groups.
• This leads to adults having even easier access to underage players than before, causing dangerous situations such as grooming.
• AI-run processes like this can easily be bypassed and tricked, leading to misplacement.
• Users (particularly minors) being required to submit biometric data such as facial scans or their government ID, including other forms of identification, is dangerous and unethical.

Underage players have often gone to certain measures to bypass the sensors — as have predatory adults. The thing is, it doesn't take much to bypass it, requiring little to no effort.

• Predators can easily buy age-verified Roblox accounts for $4 on eBay.
• Children often use photos of older relatives, or draw fake beards to trick the AI.
• Parents often scan for their children, which grants unrestricted access.

By isolating users into age groups, the system causes more problems than it solves, such as:

• Preventing older players from intervening in suspicious chats between adults and minors
• Creates echo chambers where predators can operate completely undetected

This policy often creates unintended consequences, and other results that make gameplay less convenient for users. To exemplify,

• Accounts auto-update ages, removing parental oversight if the child previously had parental controls enabled.
• 95% of games on the Roblox platform require teamwork and communication to progress, and when age groups are isolated, users can't effectively communicate.
• Friends can no longer communicate if either of them were misgrouped

This issue leads to less users enjoying Roblox, and more users leaving the platform, while also causing children to be more easily targeted by predators. 

The main goal is to reverse the policy that enforces facial recognition, especially because relying on AI to do your job is incredibly unethical and unprofessional.
