Reverse reduction of IB teacher supplemental pay in Pinellas County
The Issue
I am writing to express my deep concern for the dedicated International Baccalaureate (IB) teachers in Pinellas County, particularly those working tirelessly at Palm Harbor University High School, Largo, and St. Pete. Recently, the language of the instructional contract was changed without prior consultation or warning, leading to a significant reduction in stipends for those teaching fewer than five sections of IB-only classes. This alteration, implemented after the school year had already commenced, risks imposing a loss of well earned supplement pay of up to 14% on our devoted educators who are meeting all IB program requirements, impacting their livelihoods and morale.
Even when a teacher's students are all IB students, classes labeled AP or Pre-IB don't count toward the five-section threshold, even though they're a required part of the IB track.
IB teachers are the backbone of a rigorous academic program that prepares students for global opportunities and challenges. Their commitment to fostering a rich educational environment is pivotal. Cutting their stipends undermines their hard work and could jeopardize the success and reputation of the IB program within the Pinellas County School District.
The current pay structure inadequately reflects the value these educators bring to our community. By reducing their financial incentives due to technicalities in class allotments, we are disregarding the extra hours, planning, and mentoring these teachers provide, which is indispensable to the students' success.
Data consistently show that teachers who feel valued and fairly compensated are more effective and remain committed to their schools, leading to better student outcomes. A 2020 study by the Economic Policy Institute highlights that teacher pay cuts negatively impact students' performance due to increased turnover and reduced teacher morale.
We urge the Pinellas County School Board to reverse the decision on this contract language. Restoring the full stipends is not only a matter of fair compensation but also a crucial step to maintain the high standards of education we expect from our schools. Let us put our teachers and students first, ensuring stability and excellence in education.
Please support our dedicated IB teachers by signing this petition. Let's send a strong message to the Pinellas County School Board that our educators deserve their full stipends. Together, we can help safeguard the quality of education that our students receive.
