The Issue

The recent decision by the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to require proof of legal status for vehicle registration and renewals has sent shockwaves through the state, particularly among immigrant communities and independent auto dealers. This policy was implemented overnight via email, bypassing public hearings or any legislative due process. This abrupt change poses an immediate and severe threat to the Texas economy and the livelihoods of countless individuals.

More than 90% of customers serviced by independent auto dealers rely on passports for identification. This new requirement instantly places their financed contracts at risk of voiding, resulting in uncollectible debts for dealers and financial ruin for families who have worked hard to secure their transportation. For immigrant families, losing access to their vehicles equates to losing the ability to commute to work, take children to school, attend medical appointments, and perform other vital daily activities.

Beyond the personal impact, entire sectors of the Texas economy—namely the automotive sales industry, delivery services, and any businesses reliant on immigrant labor—face potential collapse. These immigrant families not only make up a significant portion of the workforce but are also integral to the fabric of Texas communities. Additionally, this policy could foster an atmosphere of fear and discrimination, pushing numerous hardworking individuals into the shadows.

We must also consider the ripple effect this change will have on public safety. With many unable to renew registrations, more unregistered vehicles on the roads are inevitable, increasing risks for all drivers.

The lack of transparency and absence of public input in this process is unacceptable. We urge the Texas DMV and state leadership to immediately reverse this detrimental policy. We call for a fair approach that includes community input, respects the state's diverse population, and protects both immigrant families and the economic health of Texas.

Sign this petition to demand that the Texas DMV and state leaders reverse this policy, ensure fair procedures, and support inclusive, economically beneficial practices for all Texans.
