However, recent fee increases by the Kansas Department of Wildlife & Parks and the elimination of annual camping permits have made these experiences significantly more challenging to afford. State parks are invaluable treasures that offer affordable and accessible recreation, health benefits, and a sanctuary from busy urban lives. With nearly 100,000 acres managed for recreation, Kansas is home to numerous destinations that provide enjoyment, learning, and health benefits to visitors, both local and from afar. According to a 2022 study by the National Recreation and Park Association, close accessibility to parks can reduce stress and improve physical health, with studies highlighting the significant positive impact on community well-being and individual health.
The recent fee increases undermine the very principle of accessible nature for everyone, particularly at a time when financial strain is at its peak for many families.
