The Issue

For many of us, Weymouth is not just a town; it is our home. As someone who regularly enjoys dog walking and shopping in the area, I've grown reliant on the accessibility of public facilities, not least the public toilets scattered across town. With a limited income, I find myself burdened by the recent decision to introduce charges for these essential facilities.

The imposition of fees on public toilets could disproportionately affect residents and visitors who, like me, are on a budget. These fees create barriers for those in our community who must use these facilities daily. Picture our elderly residents, parents with young children, and people with disabilities—this decision unfairly targets those who need these facilities the most.

Weymouth, known for its welcoming nature and vibrant tourism, may see a decline in visits and local shopping if people are deterred by such fees. Local businesses depend on foot traffic generated by happy visitors. We should be enhancing our town's accessibility, not hindering it.

In times past, councils provided these services free of charge, recognizing their importance to public health and community well-being. There are creative and logistically feasible alternatives, such as sponsorship deals with local businesses or limited free access hours, that would address budget concerns while maintaining free facilities.

The introduction of charges is not just an inconvenience — it’s a step backward in ensuring that Weymouth remains a community that values and prioritizes the needs of its residents and visitors alike. Join me in calling on Weymouth Town Council to reverse this decision and consider alternative solutions. Please sign this petition to help keep Weymouth’s public toilets free and accessible for all.
