Reverse course credit eligibility changes in burbank

Reverse course credit eligibility changes in burbank
The Issue
Several of my close friends, who have tirelessly dedicated themselves to sports, are now facing an unjust situation due to recent changes made by the Burbank Unified School District administration. The decision to strip summer courses like Science (with labs), English, Government/Economics, Math (with the exception of Geometry), and World Languages from being credit-eligible has thrown these students into an impossible predicament. They must now choose between their passion for sports or continuing their education, a decision no student should ever have to make.
Previously, summer courses provided a vital opportunity for students to manage their course loads more effectively, allowing them to participate in sports and electives they love. In a world where extracurricular activities are pivotal in college applications and personal growth, forcing students to abandon these interests for mandatory credits will be unjust and detrimental to their futures. Sports and electives teach students discipline, teamwork, leadership, and time management – skills that contribute significantly to their holistic development.
This sudden change has not only jeopardized the balance these students meticulously maintained but also placed undue pressure on their academic futures. Many students have specifically planned their academic calendar to ensure they can pursue their interests, with the understanding that they could offset required credits in the summer. Discontinuing this option disrupts their educational path and may even delay their graduation.
Moreover, the abruptness of this decision, without prior notice or engagement with students and parents, is disheartening. It undermines the trust and open communication that should exist between the school district and its stakeholders.
We urge the Burbank Unified School District administration to reconsider this decision and reinstate the eligibility of these summer courses for credit. Let’s stand by our students, support their pursuit of interests, and acknowledge the hard work they’ve put into both academics and extracurricular activities to forge a promising future.
Sign this petition to support a fair educational policy that appreciates and nurtures students' diverse talents and aspirations. Together, we can make a stand for what is right and ensure our students aren't forced to choose between a well-rounded education and the passions they hold dear.
