The Issue

I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the recent steep increase in fees for street closure permits in Conroe and Downtown Conroe, TX for events, festivals, and similar gatherings. Until recently, the fee was a manageable $35, but it has now skyrocketed to $1,303. As a resident and active community member, it's vital for me to stress how this sudden change could negatively impact our local businesses, event organizers, and the community at large. Thousands have already spoken out against this recent fee increase on Facebook and other social outlets such as the I Love Conroe group as well as on numerous other business pages, and individuals posts.

Events in Downtown Conroe are not just about entertainment; they are lifelines for our vibrant community. They bring foot traffic, support local economies, increase business visibility, and make our area a lively, thriving place. With this exponential fee increase, many small businesses and nonprofit organizations fear they won't be able to afford permits, leading to fewer events and potential economic downturn in the district.

Given Conroe's size and status, this hike seems disproportionate compared to fees in similar cities. Neighboring municipalities maintain much more reasonable fees, allowing them to continue hosting frequent community events without the burden of exorbitant costs.

For example, let's look at Conroe compared to some neighboring cities, other Texas cities of similar size, and even Houston, that is much larger.

Conroe, TX:
The fee was recently raised from $35 to $1,300 per street (or per block), a change that has met with community concern due to its potential impact on free events.

Houston, TX
(Population: ~2.39 million): Street function permits are approximately $50–$66.

Frisco, TX:
Special event permits are $150

Tomball, TX:
The fee is $25 per day.

Spring/The Woodlands area:
County permits generally cost under $350 in total.

I urge the City of Conroe's city council to reconsider this decision and revert the fees to their original cost or at least lower them to a level comparable with our similar cities. This would ensure continued community growth and vibrancy without placing unreasonable financial pressure on those striving to enhance our local culture and economy.

Importantly, this petition is not an attack on Conroe's city council or any other city employee(s). It's an attempt to bring to their attention, that they have made a decision without input from the citizens that they represent and work for, and the majority of the citizens of Conroe do not agree with it.

Please join us in petitioning the City of Conroe to reverse or reduce this fee increase. Together, we can ensure that Conroe and Downtown Conroe remains a bustling hub of activity, culture, and community spirit. Sign this petition to support the cause today!
