Revamp Keegan Park into a clean, beautiful, welcoming park
The Issue
As someone living opposite Keegan Park in Killingworth, you can't dismiss that the park is in a bad condition and it appears nothing is ever happening to improve it.
The Council did make some changes in 2023 or 2024, to add street lightning and remove bricks from the walls, but it's hard to see any visible improvement or imagine how those changes would improve anything significant.
We have a large patch of park land going to waste.
Overwhelmed by a derelict concrete football pitch and crumbling walls. It's an area which has become a haven for anti-social behavior and crime. Whether drug dealing, fires being started, off-road bikes being raced through the site or being used as a rat-run for those running away from the Police.
At a distance, you see beautiful trees (one of the few saving graces) but the moment you take a stroll further in, you're welcomed by concrete and brick. However it's clearly a popular spot where people walk dogs and cycle through and take walks.
The residents surrounding the park have had to endure worsening anti-social behavior for a long time and I think the state of this park, has played a part in that.
A very simple solution, would be to flatten down the park. Remove all the concrete and bricks and turn it into a large, welcoming green spot, which local families and people can use and enjoy.
A place you sit down and relax or even play football.
Maintain the path a long the edge and add a path into the center. Put in a couple of seats to sit on and add a few trees back in. And if possible, keep a raised hill so the kids still have a place to slide down, when it snows.
Add in decent lighting, so those who wish to misbehave or act anti-social on an evening can't do so in pitch black, and out of view of any of the surrounding homes.
I can appreciate doing so might cause disruption for a week or two, but once done, the entire community would have a much safer and beautiful park to use.
