Revamp How Irish is Taught in Schools
The Issue
I am the living testament of a decade-long problem that persists in our education system. Having learned Irish for ten years in school, I was somehow unable to articulate a single word of the language when I went to the Gaeltacht. However, astonishingly, after only three weeks of experiencing a different teaching method, I returned home fluent. This drastic shift in my understanding of the language made it apparent that our current education system needs modification. The traditional methods of teaching Irish have proven to be uninspiring and tedious, leading students to develop an aversion to the language they should, in fact, treasure. An OECD report suggests that students learn much more effectively when they enjoy the subject and the teaching methods complement their learning styles (OECD, 2019). We need to overhaul our approach to teaching Irish, incorporating modern, interactive, and engaging methodologies that can help students grasp the language better and foster a genuine love for it. This is having the opposite affect on the Irish revival than intended. Let us not wait for another generation of students feeling disconnected from their rich cultural heritage. Sign this petition to promote the reform of Irish language education for the benefit of our children and the integrity of our culture.
