Reunite NYPD Youth Officer Williams with Kids & Cops Corner at P.S 67
The Issue
I am writing to express the deep concern of many families in Fort Greene regarding the recent reassignment of Officer Moette Williams, who has been instrumental in the success of the afterschool program, Kids and Cops Corner, at our school.
Officer Moette Williams established Kids and Cops Corner to provide our children with a safe and enriching environment during afterschool hours. This program has not only offered academic support and extracurricular activities such as dance, art, and reading but has also fostered positive interactions with our youth and the community. Moreover, it has created opportunities for older students to gain employment and community service hours by assisting younger peers.
The impact of this program on our community cannot be overstated. It has provided a secure place for our children to learn and play during times when many parents are commuting from work, thereby reducing the risk of youth violence.
Officer Moette Williams has earned the trust and respect of both parents and school staff through her unwavering dedication and genuine care for our children. Her unique ability to connect with the youth and her commitment to the program have been pivotal to its success. Without her leadership, we fear that Kids and Cops Corner may not continue, leaving our children without this invaluable resource.
Given the community’s concerns about the potential discontinuation of the Kids and Cops Corner program following Officer Williams’s reassignment, we are seeking your guidance on possible solutions to ensure its continuation. We would greatly appreciate any assistance or suggestions you can offer to help maintain this invaluable resource for our community.
In light of recent events, our next door neighbor Walt Whitman Library which hosts after school programs will be closed for 2 years due to renovations. Our regular after school program faces many budget issues and may not continue into Summer 2025 or School Year 2026 making this program pivotal to the Community of Fort Greene.
