This problem affects those wishing to travel abroad with a pet or pets. During Brexit negotiations the UK Government failed to make adequate representation to keep the UK as a Part 1 nation for the purposes of travelling with pets. Under this status pets could travel using a UK Pet Passport. These were inexpensive and could be used indefinitely. They have subsequently been slow in tacklng this failure. As a result pet owners are subject to a more complex, more expensive and in some aspects an unregulated system. This requires owners to obtain an Animal Health Certificate. A new one has to be obtained each time a pet travels and vets can charge what they wish. Meanwhile EU Pet Passports are still valid for travel to the UK. It is widely recognised that UK Animal welfare rules are at least equal to those of the EU. We need to put pressure on the government and the appropriate department, DEFRA, to move negotiations forward more speedily.
