Return JFRD's Emergency Preparedness Chief position to its rightful JFRD members

Return JFRD's Emergency Preparedness Chief position to its rightful JFRD members

The Issue

A police officer should not be assigned to run the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department’s (JFRD) Emergency Preparedness Division, just as a firefighter would never be assigned to run a Jacksonville Sheriff's Office (JSO) Division. The current assignment appears to reflect a stance that undermines the capabilities and intelligence of our dedicated firefighters. Continuing this arrangement suggests that our firefighters are not competent enough to manage their own divisions, a notion that is not only inaccurate but also disrespectful to the courageous men and women serving our community.

Under the current configuration, Andre Ayoub, an individual from the JSO, oversees the JFRD’s Emergency Preparedness Division. We believe it is imperative that this role is occupied by a member of the JFRD, someone who has been trained and is deeply familiar with the intricacies specific to fire and rescue operations. This ensures not only the operational success of the department but also boosts the morale of the entire team.

Our firefighters are on the front lines, risking their lives to keep our community safe. They possess the skills, experience, and knowledge necessary to lead successfully. Assigning this critical leadership position to an outsider from a different discipline sends a damaging message about the perceived trust in their capabilities.

There is a respectful and efficient solution to this, which involves having Mayor Donna Deegan and Sheriff T.K. Waters reassign Andre Ayoub back to his position in the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office and filling his current role with a well-versed and experienced JFRD member. This step not only aligns with best practice but also restores faith in our fire and rescue community that they are valued and respected professionals.

Support our firefighters by urging our city leaders to make this change. Sign the petition to ensure competent leadership in the JFRD’s Emergency Preparedness Division, reinforcing our commitment to community safety and firefighter dignity.
