Return Egypt’s Ancient Artifacts from the Louvre — It’s Time They Come Home

The Issue

The recent robbery at the Louvre Museum in Paris proves that even the world’s most secure institutions cannot guarantee the safety of ancient artifacts.

For decades, Egyptian treasures have been kept abroad under the claim that they are “safer” outside Egypt. But this incident shows the opposite — no foreign museum can protect Egypt’s history better than Egypt itself.

We, the undersigned, call on the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities to formally demand the repatriation of Egyptian artifacts from the Louvre and to take stronger action to bring home all artifacts taken during colonial times.

This isn’t just about Egypt.

When one country stands up for its stolen heritage, it gives courage to other nations — from Greece to Nigeria — whose cultural treasures also remain in foreign museums.

Even the Rosetta Stone, one of Egypt’s most iconic pieces, is still displayed in the British Museum, far from the land that created it. It’s time the world recognizes that these items belong where they were born — in their rightful homelands, preserved by the descendants of those who made them.

The Louvre robbery has revealed the truth: history isn’t safe in exile.

It’s time to return Egypt’s heritage to Egypt.

Main demands:

The Egyptian government should file an official restitution request to France for all Egyptian artifacts held in the Louvre.
UNESCO should reopen discussions on the return of Egyptian cultural property.
Museums worldwide should begin returning items taken during colonial or exploitative expeditions.
