The issue

To the Premier of New South Wales,

We, the undersigned, call on the NSW Government to immediately return Bradfield Park South to North Sydney Council so it can once again be enjoyed by the public.

Bradfield Park South has remained occupied by Transport for NSW for more than three years longer than authorised under the Sydney Harbour Tunnel (Private Joint Venture) Act 1987. What was meant to be a temporary works area for Sydney Harbour Tunnel construction during the 1990s has continued as a work compound, restricting access to public parkland and contributing to ongoing destruction and contamination.

The continued occupation of Bradfield Park South denies the community safe and full access to publicly reserved open space and is inconsistent with the original purpose of the land.

We therefore call on the Premier of New South Wales to direct the Minister for Transport to:

  1. Confirm a clear, public timetable for returning Bradfield Park South to North Sydney Council.
  2. Remove the Transport for NSW work compound from the park without further delay.
  3. Implement bridge maintenance arrangements that do not result in ongoing damage to public parkland.
  4. Commit to full rehabilitation and restoration of the park at Transport for NSW’s cost.

Returning Bradfield Park South to the community will honour the original intent of the land, protect an iconic part of Sydney Harbour, and restore valuable public green space for everyone.
