The Issue

We, the undersigned parents, students, and teachers of Fairview High School are writing to express our serious concern about the loss of  Access Time for the 2025-26 school year and the decision to replace it with a new Advisory period.  It is our hope that something can be done to reinstate a version of access time, if not for the current school year, then for the 2026-27 school year and beyond.

We respect and understand the complex funding needs of  Fairview High School and that issues of funding tied to instructional time have, in part, driven this decision. We also support the intent behind Advisory. Building stronger school culture, fostering student connections, and supporting well-being are worthy goals. However, removing Access Time has created significant unintended consequences that harm both students and teachers.

For years, Access Time provided a structured and equitable opportunity for students to meet with any of their teachers during the school day. This time was invaluable for:

  1. Students needing academic support, who relied on Access Time for extra help, clarification, or remediation.
  2. Advanced and honors students, who used the time to seek enrichment, deeper understanding, or extension of classroom material.
  3. Teachers, who could efficiently support students without extending their hours beyond the school day.

The elimination of Access Time leaves students with fewer opportunities for individualized support forcing them to compete for teachers’ limited time before or after school. Many students—due to transportation schedules, athletics, jobs, or family obligations—cannot access help outside of school hours. Teachers, meanwhile, face increased pressure to work additional hours or forgo supporting students in need.

In short, this decision impacts the entire spectrum of learners, from those who struggle to those striving to excel, while simultaneously straining teachers.

We respectfully but urgently request that FHS and the Boulder Valley School District restore weekly Access Time in its prior form—or create a meaningful equivalent within the school day that guarantees students structured access to their teachers.

We stand united in asking FHS and the district to reconsider this decision in the best interests of students, teachers, and families.

Sincerely,

FHS Community
