Over the years, as I've lived in regional and rural areas, I've come to love and appreciate the characteristics of places like Strathalbyn, the stone buildings, the strong community, and the lovely land that surrounds. It is vital it is to preserve the heritage, character, and community spirit that makes our Aussie culture unique and our part of the world worth it. Just think, Strath is built off 19th century stone buildings and significant and thoughtful architecture which offers more than aesthetic value. It represents and conserves a piece of Aussie history, and the town thrives on that.

Not too long ago, when I heard about the proposed development of a McDonald's and shopping center in Strathalbyn, I immediately had concerns. The thought of a large concrete development with no character coming to the main entrance of our town was unsettling. I have explored options such as talking to council, seeing what other towns have done like Goolwa's Chittaslow guidelines, and even talking to the MP Robert Roylance, but most of these have told me one thing, power comes from the whole community.

In part with the massive development to Strath in such a small time, seeing the beauty of the town’s unique character almost being diluted, each small café and family-run store continues to have more and more competition with the most notable examples being KFC and the Reject shop.

We need to rethink this development. Strathalbyn doesn't need another fast-food chain; it needs our support in maintaining its identity. We must invest in projects that enrich the community, nurture local talent, and celebrate our Aussie spirit, keeping our country's culture vibrant and distinct.

There are successful examples of development projects in towns like Goolwa, which have integrated modern amenities while respecting their historical roots with their Chittaslow qualities. And I believe what Cittaslow has to offer is perfect for Strath, so let's make it happen. Urge Alexandrina, make it known in the community, and lets see something come of this. We want local and Australian business, design that complements the town, and preservation of the natural beauty.
