The proposed theme for the Western Springs College Ball of 'A Night in Kyoto' has left many students feeling uneasy and concerned. The theme is vague, potentially restrictive, and raises the specter of cultural appropriation. 

While the intention may be to offer an exotic experience, its execution may inadvertently reinforce stereotypes and contribute to the objectification of an entire culture. This concern parallels the wider discourse on cultural appropriation where, according to a study by the University of Illinois, more than half of the respondents believe it is a problem.

Furthermore, I believe that we can collectively think of a superior, more inclusive and respectful theme for our high school ball. We are a diverse and imaginative group of students, capable of proposing a theme that reflects our creativity without offending cultural sensitivities. 

Our aim is not to ruin the tradition of the high school ball, but to ensure it is an event every student can enjoy without reservation. Let’s return to the drawing board, and work together in choosing a theme that is fun, respectful, and inclusive for all.
